Psalm 143

1  Hear my prayer, O Lord,
and in your faithfulness give ear to my supplications; ♦︎
   answer me in your righteousness.
2  Enter not into judgement with your servant, ♦︎
for in your sight shall no one living be justified.
3  For the enemy has pursued me,
crushing my life to the ground, ♦︎
making me sit in darkness like those long dead.
4  My spirit faints within me; ♦︎
my heart within me is desolate.
5  I remember the time past; I muse upon all your deeds; ♦︎
I consider the works of your hands.
6  I stretch out my hands to you; ♦︎
my soul gasps for you like a thirsty land.
7  O Lord, make haste to answer me; my spirit fails me; ♦︎
hide not your face from me
lest I be like those who go down to the Pit.
8  Let me hear of your loving-kindness in the morning,
for in you I put my trust; ♦︎
show me the way I should walk in,
for I lift up my soul to you.
9  Deliver me, O Lord, from my enemies, ♦︎
for I flee to you for refuge.
10  Teach me to do what pleases you, for you are my God; ♦︎
let your kindly spirit lead me on a level path.
11  Revive me, O Lord, for your name’s sake; ♦︎
for your righteousness’ sake, bring me out of trouble.
12  In your faithfulness, slay my enemies,
and destroy all the adversaries of my soul, ♦︎
for truly I am your servant.

1 Kings 17: 17-24

Elijah Revives the Widow’s Son

17 After this the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, became ill; his illness was so severe that there was no breath left in him. 18She then said to Elijah, ‘What have you against me, O man of God? You have come to me to bring my sin to remembrance, and to cause the death of my son!’ 19But he said to her, ‘Give me your son.’ He took him from her bosom, carried him up into the upper chamber where he was lodging, and laid him on his own bed. 20He cried out to the Lord, ‘O Lord my God, have you brought calamity even upon the widow with whom I am staying, by killing her son?’ 21Then he stretched himself upon the child three times, and cried out to the Lord, ‘O Lord my God, let this child’s life come into him again.’ 22The Lord listened to the voice of Elijah; the life of the child came into him again, and he revived. 23Elijah took the child, brought him down from the upper chamber into the house, and gave him to his mother; then Elijah said, ‘See, your son is alive.’ 24So the woman said to Elijah, ‘Now I know that you are a man of God, and that the word of the Lord in your mouth is truth.’

Acts 20: 7-12

Paul’s Farewell Visit to Troas

On the first day of the week, when we met to break bread, Paul was holding a discussion with them; since he intended to leave the next day, he continued speaking until midnight. 8There were many lamps in the room upstairs where we were meeting. 9A young man named Eutychus, who was sitting in the window, began to sink off into a deep sleep while Paul talked still longer. Overcome by sleep, he fell to the ground three floors below and was picked up dead. 10But Paul went down, and bending over him took him in his arms, and said, ‘Do not be alarmed, for his life is in him.’ 11Then Paul went upstairs, and after he had broken bread and eaten, he continued to converse with them until dawn; then he left. 12Meanwhile they had taken the boy away alive and were not a little comforted.
